Speaker Biographies
1. Bishop Paul Dempsey
Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin
Originally from Carlow, Bishop Dempsey lived most of his life in Kildare. He was ordained a priest in 1997 for Kildare & Leighlin Diocese. Bishop Dempsey worked in parish ministry, youth ministry, and local media. He was appointed Bishop of Achonry Diocese in the West of Ireland in 2020. Bishop Dempsey was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin in 2024.
2. Fr. Luke Macnamara OSB
Luke Macnamara is a lecturer in Sacred Scripture at St Patrick's Pontifical University Maynooth. A graduate of UCD medical school in 1994, he specialised in General Practice, before becoming a monk of Glenstal Abbey in 1998. He pursued theological studies in Paris and specialised in Scripture at the Biblical Institute in Rome. He has been lecturing at St Patrick's since 2014.
3. Fr. Michael Shortall
Rev, Dr. Michael Shortall is currently Dean of the Faculty of Theology at St Patrick’s Pontifical University, Maynooth. A native of Kilkenny, he is a priest of the Archdiocese of Dublin, where he also supports the parish team in West Tallaght. His field is moral theology, within which he has a variety of interests. At the moment, he is researching the dynamics of Catholic Social Teaching, and modes of ethics in organisational leadership.
4. Sr. Dr. Joseph CP
Born 1939 - started the Second World War personally!!!
Primary school was in Manchester and Secondary School was in Bradford in Yorkshire. She joined the Sisters of The Cross and Passion there.
Sr. Jo was sent to medical school and then to the Botswana Mission for 5 years. This was followed by 29 years as a surgeon, doctor and healthcare leader in Papua New Guinea, a place she found to be grossly corrupt in the end. To quote herself: “them, not me!!!”.
5. Prof. Ross Murphy
Consultant Cardiologist
Professor Ross Murphy MD, MSc, FRCPI, is a graduate of RCSI (1993). He trained in Dublin, at St George’s Hospital, London, and The Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA. He has been a Consultant Cardiologist at St. James’s Hospital, Dublin 2006 and is a Clinical Associate Professor at TCD. His special interests include cardiac imaging and valve disease, Cardiac CT, and his research interests include the genetics of cardiomyopathy, newer echo modalities, and the vascular biology of coronary plaque.
